The best waterfalls in Kenya

Perched at over 2,300 meters above sea level, Nyahururu is Kenya's highest-altitude town — and home to one of the country's most underrated natural landmarks: Thomson's Falls (Thompson Falls). A stone staircase winds down the gorge right to the base of the waterfall, where the roar of falling water and drifting mist make it easy to slow down and just sit for a while. If you're building a Kenya itinerary that goes beyond the usual safari circuit, Thomson's Falls is a worthwhile detour.

The path down to the falls is entirely stairs, so wear comfortable, closed shoes. Along the way you'll likely encounter wild baboons — they're used to tourists and quick to investigate bags left unattended, so keep your belongings close, especially when setting things down for photos.
