The best waterfalls in Guangdong Province

Most of what gets recommended on Tanglang Mountain is the climb. Forty minutes of steps to Jimu Pavilion, sunset views over Futian's skyline, the whole "release your week's stress" pitch that shows up on every Shenzhen hiking list. We went for something else entirely and ended up spending almost the whole day there without going near the summit trail.

There's a waterfall at the base of the mountain, in the Shenyun Valley section of Tanglang Mountain Country Park, and getting to it barely counts as hiking. We parked at the P2 lot by Shenyun Cultural and Sports Park and were at the falls in under fifteen minutes, most of it on a flat, wide path you could push a stroller down. There's one short stretch of steps right before the falls themselves. That's it.

The waterfall, and why the timing mattered

There's a coffee shop in the mountains outside Zhongshan where you can sit outside, look at a waterfall, and drink a flat white. That sentence alone is why this trail keeps showing up on people's weekend plans. What it doesn't tell you is that getting there takes 2.5 hours of steady climbing, most of it on stone steps, and that there is not a single toilet along the way.

This is the Changkeng Country Trail (长坑郊野步道), tucked into Wuguishan, the mountain range that forms the natural ridge between Zhongshan and Zhuhai.
