Dunn’s River Falls is a must-visit attraction in Jamaica. Climbing the waterfall barefoot is both exciting and fun, not to mention the stunning rainforest scenery—it’s a truly immersive experience. The waterfall is located at the mouth of a river that flows into the sea, made up of a series of terraced, step-like cascades. Along the way there are many natural pools, and the water is very clear, with even the deepest sections only reaching about waist height. There are free guided tours inside the park, where guides lead groups hand-in-hand starting from the beach at the river mouth. The advantage is that they know the safest routes and can help take photos. The downside is that it can be crowded and slow, with lots of people in your shots. We chose to climb on our own, which gave us complete freedom to explore, and we even went back for another climb after finishing—it was that enjoyable. The falls are located in Ocho Rios, about a 2-hour drive from Montego Bay. You can drive yourself (most flexible and cost-effective), join a day tour (most convenient), or hire a private transfer. Entry is around USD 25, and water shoes are highly recommended. Try to go early and avoid cruise ship days, otherwise the falls can get very crowded and it’s harder to take good photos.

From the entrance, follow the path down to the beach at the base of the falls. Join a guided group (mandatory) and form a human chain or hold the guide rope to climb up the 180-meter terraced waterfall. The climb follows the natural limestone steps created by the cascading water. At the top, exit through the park grounds back to the entrance area.
