I had originally planned to skip Helmcken Falls altogether, but thankfully I came across a documentary before the trip and instantly fell in love with it. I changed my route without hesitation. The main route from Kamloops to Jasper is already over 440 km, but I gladly added another 100 km just to visit this spectacular sight hidden deep in the mountains of British Columbia. Driving through the layers of pristine forests in Wells Gray Provincial Park, I finally reached Canada’s fourth-highest waterfall. A 141-meter column of water plunges straight down the cliff, and the thunderous roar fills the entire valley. The cool mist rushes toward you, instantly washing away all the heat and fatigue from the road. Standing alone in the wilderness, surrounded by mountains and forests, with nothing but the endless sound of rushing water and the fresh scent of grass and trees in the air, I completely forgot about the rush and trivialities of travel. It was one of those moments when you can truly slow down and let yourself relax in the embrace of nature. Some views are simply worth going the extra hundred kilometers for. The best surprises often come when you’re willing to take the longer road.
