Sipi Falls

Before I left Uganda, I made sure to go see Sipi Falls. I'm glad I did — it's one of those places that's easy to put off and then regret not making time for. Sipi Falls is one of the well-known attractions in eastern Uganda, often called the country's "most romantic waterfall." It sits on the north-western slopes of Mount Elgon and is actually made up of three separate falls, not one. The water doesn't just stop in the valley below — it flows into Lake Kyoga, then joins Lake Victoria, eventually becoming part of the White Nile. Where the name comes from The name "Sipi" comes from a local plant, "Sep," a wild plant used in traditional medicine. Over time, "Sep" evolved into "Sipi," and the name stuck to the falls themselves. Hiking the three falls This is really a hike, not a single viewpoint, and it's worth understanding the layout before you go. From Sipi Heritage Lodge, it's about a 20-minute walk to the second-tier waterfall, Simba Falls — and here you can actually walk right underneath the falling water, not just look at it from the side. From there, it's another hour uphill to reach the first-tier waterfall, Ngasire Falls, which takes more effort but rewards you with a much quieter spot. At Crow's Nest, a separate 15-minute walk brings you to a platform on the mountainside where you get a full view of the third-tier main falls. This spot doubles as one of the best places to watch the sunset — if your timing allows for it, don't rush off before then. The falls are only about 9km from the nearest town, which makes it an easy add-on if you're already in the area. Arranging a guide You don't need to sort a guide out in advance. The hotels near the falls can almost always connect you with a reliable one on the spot. About the kids on the trail One thing worth knowing before you go: along the hiking trail, you'll likely meet local children who offer, quite eagerly, to guide you. It's tempting to say yes — but I'd suggest politely declining. It's not a safety concern. I heard this repeatedly from the guides themselves — if kids get used to making money this way, they lose the motivation to keep studying. Better to leave the guiding to the adults who do it as their livelihood. One small but useful tip When you're descending from the falls, hold onto the bamboo pole your guide gives you. It looks like a formality, but it genuinely helps with balance on the way down.
