This is from last August, a trip without the kids, and it's stuck with me ever since. A local told us about it. Ta-taki Falls, deep in the mountains of northern Okinawa. Barely any visitors from home seem to know it exists. I've done plenty of river treks back home. Most of them are developed within an inch of their life. Paved paths, railings, gift shops at the end. Ta-taki isn't like that. The valley's basically untouched. No real commercial development, no rubbish anywhere along the river, just water and wind through the trees. The only thing built by human hands is a rope at a couple of the steep, rocky bits, bolted in to help you climb. That's it. The trail follows the river upstream, so you're wading for most of it. Knee-deep in places, along the Henan River. Wildlife everywhere. Small lizards darting across the rocks and through the grass the whole way up. Not scary at all, just shy — leave them be and they go about their business. Walking against the current slows everything down. Between the wading, playing in the water, stopping for photos, we were out there two hours minimum, round trip. Call it light trekking, not a stroll. It takes patience and some stamina. Not suited to small kids or older relatives — barely any development, no handrails, no flat ground, and you'll need the rope to pull yourself up in a few spots. Young kids can't pace themselves and slip easily. Anyone with knee or mobility trouble will be worn out fast. But if you're reasonably fit and have done a bit of outdoor stuff before, you'll love it. The waterfall itself isn't huge. Maybe ten metres, a plunge fall with a clear pool underneath you can swim in. Not the most dramatic thing I've photographed. Doesn't matter. After the walk in, standing under it felt better than most of the bigger, more Instagrammed waterfalls I've been to. A few things before you go. Water shoes, not trainers, not sandals. Sandals get swept off, trainers just fill up and drag. The rocks get slippery with moss. Check the weather first too — rain the night before or on the day and the site just closes, no exceptions, because the river rises fast up there and flash flooding is a real risk. And you don't have to finish the whole route. If the full walk feels like too much, there are shallow spots partway in where you can paddle around and take photos and it's still worth it. It's in Ogimi Village, northern Okinawa. Search for the Henan River Ta-taki car park specifically, not just the waterfall name, or your GPS will send you somewhere wrong — we drove ourselves, got lost once on the mountain roads, found it properly on the second go. No entry fee for the falls, just parking. 500 yen for the first two hours, 50 yen every half hour after. The car park rents life jackets and helmets too, plus there's a toilet and a coin shower, 100 yen a go.
