Tutea Falls: Standing Beside the World's Highest Rafted Waterfall I lost count of the steps on the way down somewhere past forty. Didn't matter, because by then I could already hear it through the trees before I saw a thing. Then the track opened out onto a platform and there it was, seven metres of white water going straight down, close enough that the spray hit the rail I was leaning on. No photo had prepared me for it. I'd looked at plenty before the trip, and not one of them got across how loud the place actually is, or that cold, restless mist that hits your skin before you even register it's there. You're standing there, water roaring below, having to raise your voice to talk to the person next to you, and you just feel small next to it. This isn't some quiet waterfall you snap a photo of and wander off from. It's got a bit of a temper. Why This One Waterfall Gets So Much Attention Tutea Falls sits on the Kaituna River, not far from Rotorua on New Zealand's North Island. It's about seven metres high, which doesn't sound huge until you learn it's generally considered the world's highest commercially rafted waterfall. The rapid it creates is graded V, right at the edge of what's still allowed for commercial rafting trips at all. That title is basically why people come here in the first place. Most visitors aren't stopping for a quick look from the bank. Rafting is really the only way to actually go over the drop, and that few seconds tends to be the bit everyone talks about afterward. What the Rafting Trip Actually Involves Companies run trips down this section of the Kaituna most of the year. On the water you're looking at somewhere between 45 minutes and an hour, working through around 14 rapids and three waterfalls before Tutea Falls shows up near the end as the finale. Add in the safety talk, getting kitted out and transport, and you're probably looking at two and a half to three hours total, depending on the operator. You don't need any rafting background. Guides talk you through paddling and safety before you even get in the water, wetsuits and helmets are provided, and most companies set a minimum age somewhere around 10 to 13 (it varies by trip). If you want the version of this landmark that gets your heart rate up rather than the one from a viewing platform, this is one of those things people in Rotorua will bring up unprompted. Or Walk the Okere Falls Track and Skip the Boat If rafting's not your thing, or you'd just rather keep dry, the Okere Falls Track covers the same stretch of river on foot. It runs through the Okere Falls Scenic Reserve, past Okere Falls near the start, then Tutea Falls roughly halfway, then on to Kaituna Falls (also known as Trout Pool Falls) further along. It's short. Most people are done in 30 to 45 minutes unless they linger at every platform, and there's parking at both ends so you don't have to walk the whole loop if you're pressed for time. Honestly, even if rafting is the whole reason you drove out there, do the walk too. Watching a raft crew go over that edge from up on the platform is a bit of a thrill on its own. The Steps and the Cave Behind the Falls The steps down to the viewing platform have a history worth knowing before you rush past them. They're called Hinemoa's Steps, cut into the rock in 1907 during Rotorua's early tourism days, and they lead down to a cave right next to the falls. That cave is named after a Pikiao chief called Tutea, said to be buried nearby — which is also where the falls got their name. During times of conflict, local Māori women and children reportedly used the cave as a hiding place, climbing down by rope to stay out of danger from the river above. Once you know that, the whole spot feels different. It's not just a nice photo stop. There's real weight to it, and the information panels along the track explain it without turning the walk into a lecture. Getting There The reserve is about 20 minutes northeast of Rotorua off State Highway 33, with parking near both trailheads. Do the walk before you raft and you'll know exactly what you're about to go over. Do it after and you get to stand there looking at the same drop from solid ground, working out how you just survived it. Either way, don't rush through it. Going over the falls on a raft takes seconds. The walk takes half an hour. But it's the kind of place that's worth standing still in for longer than you planned — the noise, the spray, the steps under your feet with all that history in them. A lot packed into somewhere so small.
