Yosemite | Vernal Falls beginner hiking experience For hikers with limited exercise and little trekking experience, this is a simple sharing from a beginner’s perspective. Note: In summer, part of the Mist Trail is under maintenance. Before 3:30pm, hikers must take a detour via the John Muir Trail. I chose to start after 3:30pm and did a round trip on the Mist Trail, covering about 4.5 km. Route and timing: 3:00 pm shuttle bus (Green Line, stop 7) → 3:30 pm arrival at Happy Isles → 6:30 pm finish hike Experience: The actual hiking time was about 2 hours, but if you want to take photos, it’s better to allow around 3 hours in total. The outbound route is mostly uphill and quite exposed to the sun. Near the waterfall, there are very steep stone steps, and we did not climb all the way to the top of the falls, only stopped at the base for photos. By late July, the water volume is not very strong anymore. At the base of the falls you can feel some mist, but you won’t get completely soaked. Overall, it is quite physically demanding, so good grip shoes and sun protection are recommended. The return journey is easier and more shaded. If you are sensitive to heat, it’s better to start later in the day. Shuttle bus frequency on the Green Line may reduce in the evening, so it’s worth considering switching to the Purple Line if needed.

Route and trail notes for Vernal Fall
From Happy Isles trailhead, follow the Mist Trail along the Merced River for 1.4 km to the Vernal Fall footbridge (great view). Continue on the steep Mist Trail with 600+ granite steps alongside the waterfall (expect to get wet from spray). The trail reaches the top of Vernal Fall where you can see Emerald Pool. Return the same way or via the John Muir Trail for a longer, less steep descent.
