The best waterfalls in Bosnia and Herzegovina

When the 25-meter-high horseshoe-shaped waterfall plunges down wrapped in emerald-green mist, welcome to the “Huangguoshu of Bosnia” — Kravica Waterfall.

The entire waterfall complex appears in a very raw and natural state. Visitors can fully immerse themselves among the falls and pools—swimming, playing in the water, or even boating.

Best of all, the site is free to enter, and you can reach the main area without needing to take a shuttle. There are also small stalls inside selling fruit wine that are definitely worth trying—delicious, affordable, and even served with free ice, making the whole experience even better.

Skakavac Waterfall

The last time I stood here, the waterfall wasn't moving. It had frozen solid, the whole rock face sealed under ice, white on white. That was winter. Six hundred-odd days have gone by since then, somehow, and this time the hillside around it is still green, just starting to edge toward the yellow of late autumn. Same waterfall, same spot on the trail, and it looked like a different place entirely.

Standing there again, mist coming off the water and landing on my face, it was hard not to think about how much time had actually passed while I wasn't paying attention.
