Bad Gastein in Austria and it was so beautiful, honestly such good value too. Wasn't even planned — a friend and I decided kind of last minute we needed a trip, so here's a rundown of how it went plus some tips. Mainly did: hiking, walking around the mountains, hot springs, just soaking in the scenery. Coming from Munich, there's no direct train, you have to change in Salzburg. Whole thing took a bit over 3 hours, tickets were around €60 round trip. Our hotel sent a car to pick us up from the station so that part was easy. Once we got there we just went straight to grab lunch near the waterfall. Our hotel wasn't super close to the center, about 10 min by bus or 30 min walking. Buses only come once an hour though so if you're not driving, check the times before you head out or you'll be waiting around for nothing. The train ride down from Salzburg is honestly worth mentioning on its own — make sure you sit by the window. It's just green hills the whole way and mountains with snow on them in the distance, kept looking out the window the entire ride. Bad Gastein itself isn't like a normal small town. It's actually nicknamed the "Monte Carlo of the Alps" and you can tell why as soon as you get there — there's this huge waterfall that just runs right through the middle of the town, between all these old grand hotel buildings built into the hillside. Feels very old-world, like nothing's changed there in a hundred years. Things worth seeing: the waterfall bridge, and St. Nicholas Church — the red spire is really photogenic, ended up in so many of our photos without even trying. Besides the waterfall there's actually really good hiking around here too, and the natural hot springs are famous. Did both and honestly the hot springs after a day of walking is exactly what you need. Overall really worth it. Good value, beautiful, and you get hiking + old town + hot springs all in one place, which doesn't happen a lot. If you're near Munich or Salzburg and want a quick trip, this is a solid pick.
