Oakley Creek Waterfall

I didn't actually think Auckland had a waterfall until a friend mentioned this one, almost as an afterthought. Turns out it does, just the one, and it's sitting right behind Unitec in Waterview, a few minutes off Great North Road. I'll admit I went in expecting basically nothing. Auckland is not exactly known for dramatic scenery inside the city limits, and I figured "the only waterfall in the city" was going to be more of a trickle than a waterfall. It's not huge, to be fair, but it's a proper curtain of water dropping over a rock ledge into a pool, and it's honestly a nice surprise for somewhere this close to the motorway. The full name is Oakley Creek, or Te Auaunga, and the reserve around it is sometimes called Oakley Creek Esplanade Reserve. There's a viewing platform, a boardwalk, a few picnic tables, and a good amount of bush and birdlife along the walk in, which makes the whole thing feel much further from the city than it actually is. Getting there Address-wise it's 1508 Great North Road, Waterview. The entrance sits right behind Unitec, and from there it's about a twenty-minute walk down to the falls. That's roughly in line with what the local walking guides say too, some list it closer to fifteen, but either way you're not committing to a big outing here. The park itself is much bigger than the walk to the waterfall suggests, so if you've got more time you can keep following the track well past the falls. We didn't, we were there for the waterfall specifically, but it's worth knowing the option's there if you want a longer walk. One thing worth flagging: parts of the track were damaged by flooding and storms a while back, and repairs haven't fully caught up everywhere. Past the waterfall specifically, there's a bit of a rough patch where the path's been washed out, so don't expect a completely smooth walkway the whole way through if you decide to keep going. The walk itself The entrance is right on Great North Road, and once you're down off the road there's a fork. One way, on the left, is the longer loop, about thirty minutes, flat and easy the whole way. The other, on the right, gets you to the waterfall in about five minutes. We went right. If you're short on time or just want the waterfall without the full loop, that's the one to take. The path itself is flat, well maintained, and genuinely suitable for pretty much any fitness level. No stairs to worry about, no steep sections catching you off guard, which honestly makes a nice change from most waterfall walks around New Zealand where there's always some brutal set of steps waiting at the end. Was it worth it For something this close and this easy, yes, completely. It's not going to compete with the big South Island waterfalls in scale, but that's not really the point. This is the kind of thing you do on a random Tuesday afternoon when you've got forty minutes free and don't want to drive anywhere. If you're in Auckland and don't feel like committing to a proper day-long walkway, this is a solid option to slot in.
