Waterfall height

Seljalandsfoss is known as one of Iceland’s most photogenic waterfalls. Its greatest highlight is that you can walk behind the waterfall and experience its grandeur from a completely unique perspective. It is located on Iceland’s South Coast along Route 1, about 120 km southeast of Reykjavík. The waterfall has a vertical drop of about 60 meters. Its water originates from meltwater of the Eyjafjallajökull glacier. Geologically, the cliff used to be part of Iceland’s ancient coastline. After glacial periods caused land uplift and the shoreline to retreat, the original sea cliff became an inland escarpment. Over millions of years of erosion, a large natural cave formed behind the waterfall, creating one of the rare “walk-behind waterfall” formations in the world. A circular walking path runs along the base of the cliff, allowing visitors to walk around the waterfall. From inside the cave behind the water curtain, you can look outward across the southern plains and distant mountains through the flowing water. The mist echoes inside the cavern with a deep roaring sound, making it feel like stepping into a hidden chamber of nature. This is the most distinctive feature that sets it apart from Skógafoss. Seljalandsfoss has also been widely used as a filming location for movies, music videos, and TV shows, and is one of the most photographed waterfalls in Iceland. The view from inside the waterfall is considered an iconic Icelandic composition.
